The Basics of Poker

Poker

Poker is a card game played by multiple players in which each player has chips to bet with. The goal is to make a five-card hand by using the cards you are dealt and the community cards. In this game, each player is betting against the other players, and bluffing is a key element of play.

There are many variants of Poker, but all have the same core features. A round of betting starts when all players have received their two hole cards. Each player has the option to call, raise or fold. Players are required to show their hands at the end of each betting phase, but can choose not to reveal their hand if they wish.

When a player makes a bet and no other players choose to call it, the bettor is awarded the pot without showing their cards. This is known as a “pot-size bet.” Players can also place additional chips into the pot without calling it. This is called an “all-in” bet.

Depending on the rules of the game, there may be one or more side pots in addition to the original pot. Each time a player raises a bet, they must bet at least the amount required for them to call (e.g., if they bet four chips and the pot is six chips, they must raise at least 14 chips).

Depending on the variant of Poker, players may establish a special fund called a “kitty” for expenses such as food and drinks. This is built up by “cutting” (taking) one low-denomination chip from each pot in which there are more than one raise. The chips left in the kitty when the game ends are divided equally among players who remain in the hand.
