What?

@Lord_Tryzalot
here

I've never had an issue with that, and I've read through that Azumanga omnibus at least 6 times. In fact the omnibuses that I have have been pretty damn sturdy. The only manga that I've had issues with were the sixth volume of Dorohedoro and the first volume of Parasyte. Both had the bindings very lightly glued and all the pages fell out still glued together, just no cover. I was able to fix them myself.

I've had more instances of that happening with other books that aren't manga that are printed in the US.

Hardcovers are much better than softcovers

God no. I have plenty of imported manga and Japan publishes great softcovers with dustcovers. The binding is impeccable - both flexible and highly durable.

But then I have couple recent English manga publications. They are these cheap as shit "hard"covers made out of layered cardboard with terrible paper and primitive bindings that will break after a few years of reading. They are fucking terrible. And the real kicker? They cost twice as much as a Japanese volume.

SomethingNew
SomethingNew

Omnibuses are really nice when it's hard cover and I don't mind 2-in-1s.

It's when you get shit like Tezuka's Dororo getting released as single 850-page omnibus in paperback format that takes the fucking cake. It's not comfortable to hold at all.

@Emberburn

I do kind of regret getting these metal ones. They are nice and breathable to keep the manga dry and from getting smelly or mildewy at all which is nice, but the shelves are way too far apart wasting space I could be using.

Once I get a house I'll probably buy better shelves and use these ones as general storage.

Can't say that I do, but everything I've heard on Sheeky Forums anyways (hardly a good resource) seems to say that Japanese releases are usually of subpar quality, at least when it comes to the paper quality. I'd assume that that would translate into poor binding as well.

Would have been nice if they had dust covers though because the quality of the books are otherwise absolutely stellar.

@PackManBrainlure
Of the few imported copies I own, nothing about the quality comes across as cheap. A few other things to note too:
Japanese volumes are typically larger in dimension
Generally more colour pages
Dust covers

Magazines are (understandably) much cheaper in quality though.

Flameblow
Flameblow

@Dreamworx
And I'd just like to add: never buy localized/domestically released artbooks unless it's something like the Valkyria Chronicles books where there's lots of text to gleam over.

I've have the bindings come loose on two Udon published books (Okami and an Ar Tonelico book). But it's not just that, they cut corners in places and the overall quality feels worse.

Their release of the Monster Hunter Artworks is especially bad when compared to the original Japanese releases, both of which came as two dust-covered books (a colour book and a B/W book) stored in something akin to an artbox/sleeve to store them in. Oh, you also got a couple bookmarks as extra.

Udon's release is both the colour and BW book slapped together with no dust cover.

Here. The quality of paper they used surprised me, especially back in 2006/7. But the quality of the printing itself was all over the map. My copy of Unbalance x2 volume 2 is very heavily inked, other copies I've seen range from very light to as dark as mine.
If I remember, they switched to pure digital releases toward the end, flat out cancelling some physical releases because of the terrible quality control in the printing process.
