Bonus point if they're not referencing other anime/manga.
References in Anime/Manga
i..really hope the right was made after
Shit la Shit has a lot of references in its background characters
Yeah, it's after. Someone send them the screencap of actual anime and then they emulated it.
I freaking love Gintama
pani poni dash.jpg
There's like 12 of these for the first season alone.
I still don't get how this happened
every once in a while through some horrible occurrence in the universe, two things that would never come together meet.
Keroro had references to Western stuff too.
A lot of Vento Aureo covers are similar to Prince album covers
yfw Araki is older than Eastwood
All the Jojo stands are named with Album names.
Yeah, it's just that i realized that Giorno looks a lot like Prince and all his poses really look like an Prince Album cover
I remember someone pointed out a Shaun of the Dead reference in some anime, but I couldn't remember.
Keroro's Space Police emblem is taken from the UMMO UFO case's symbol (which was a planned fake meant to prove how credulous and paranoid the population is).
God damn it now I'm desperately craving for an anime depicting Spitfires and Hurricanes wrecking shit.
High School of the Dead, m8.
Seriously? How old apart were they?
Bureau of Proto Society has a gorilla amount of references, both anime and not.
Why not write that in English too?
The entire series was pretty much Napoleon / Alexander / Julius Caesar in Space.
Pic related is from Napoleons escape from Elba.
been meaning to watch it for a long time
It's from Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
You are dumb
No he's not. Eastwood was born 1930, Araki 1960.
Trying this hard to fit in
Just say it, you will not die, and no one will disrespect you any less than they already do. Kill La Kill, is it that hard?
Why is Shindol so best?
avoid it, is didn´t age well at all. is almost unwatchable today. wait for the remake.
Nigga are you referring to Yamato or LoGH?
You again. You were in the other LOGH thread. Is english you seventh language or something?
Disregard that retard. Or anyone who uses terms like "wait for the remake" or "didn't age well"
Not that user and ignoring the actual qualities of the shows involved, but stuff aging badly is a legitimate thing in entertainment media.
Maybe he doesn't like KlK, user. Is it so hard to believe that someone thinks differently than you?
Damn, i'm always wondering why this anime is mostly focused on fan service instead of it's ww2 like setting
More people like asses than WW2 war tech, that's why.
Skull Knight's helmet.
You got red on you.
gurren laggan reference? bros
Is that a TTGL reference?
This is why TTGLfags are uncultured scums
Is this bait?
More like Studio BROnes
Evangelion is literally reference : the anime.
Except it's literally only visually striking cues that get referenced. The closest thing to a plot reference it has is the Childhood's End/Here Comes the Flood connection, and Anno is confirmed as never having read Arthur C. Clarke or listening to Peter Gabriel.
Someone should post the Kekkai Sensen/Pacific rim one
Why are EVA references so hilarious?
its a silly meme. No one actually believes its a Gurren Lagann reference
Why did Try Fighters have to be such shit
Try Fighters was disappointment of the year for me. The problem was not that it's horrible, it was decent, but because Fighters was so damned good.
That Kampfer-GN Sniper fight in Fighters was some crazy shit.
You know it
This scene from GATE was straight out of Apocalypse Now.
never listened to Peter Gabriel
Why do that when they referenced a much superior movie, Twins.
Actually Araki is from the 1700s.
I watched this like a year after KlK and had the weirdest sense of Deja Vu the first time the ending played.
Do you have the one with the glove?
I really need to rewatch Ping Pong.
jeeze the eva BD really changed things up
tfw watching pingpong right the fuck now
The way they do some of the transitions like in your pic remind me of older TV shows and movies.
And my god why does that Chink dude look so good rotoscoped?
That one is actually pretty cool.
Nice to know that he admitted to being a pleb on top of being a hack.
Dirty Pair also had a Terminator episode
sauce on the anime?
How can my Eldritch Abomination be so sexualized?!
An old one: Knight Rider reference in Hayate, with KITT included.
I feel like this is more than a reference, because the characters themselves are the ones playing the music since they are aware of the movie.
It's like an in universe reference.
any news on the remake?
Learn the rules, how to type in english and how to greentext correctly before posting, retard.
No clue, they just said they were gonna work on it after Arslan Senki
Their NCO actually mentioned Killgore by name.
Man, Kel a kek was hilarious.
Haruhi had a lot of references, whether it was in reference to the west, Elizabethan Era, old scripture, movies, etc.
Also, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is literally Hyperion-Cantos: The Anime.
I don't have a picture to describe it, but this plotline was a very clear fight club reference.
Couple hundred at least. Pretty sure the only older living man is Keanu Reeves.
Gabagool? Over here.
Reminds me of something.
kill la kill's ending is a ripoff of a kamen rider ending, didn't even try like half the show
In the opening of Inou-Battle, Chifuyu was riding a giant Inferno Cop.
Inou Battle was absolutely packed with references.
Someone did a Jojo pose in nearly every episode.
That's not a reference they're just drinking out of cups at the same angle.
Thank you Mr. Amemiya
Jojo poses are the lowest of low-hanging fruit when it comes to putting references in anime.
Too bad is has got to the point that everytime someone makes a silly pose in an anime, people think it is a Jojo reference. Can't have characters pose anymore without being labelled a reference.
To be fair Jojo's poses are legendary for a reason. None can surpass them.
What is this referencing? Seems familiar but I can't place it.
I guess it's the anime equivalent to "the Simpsons did it" where Jojo has been around for so long it's basically monopolised all forms of posing.
Although to be fair a lot of the times they really are blatant Jojo references.
Oh my god! How have I never noticed the parallels before!
Guts is Ash!
Fucking everything in PPD. Listing them all would take days.
This part was even better than the loli symmetrical docking
sasuga Silver Link
Okusama ha Majou
this movie was made after berserk but based on götz von berlichingen
the whole angle episode of macademi wasshoi
I just started the first Hyperion book a few days ago. On the soldiers story atm. What the hell does Haruhi have to do with it at all?
what is he referencing?
What's this referencing?
The two on the right are David Bowie and Michael Jackson.
Also Sid Vicious and Madonna
I sure hope this is bait
some korean animator is apparently an esports fan of a team called CLG
it's a lousy play no one really likes
i think bruce would be too smart-alicky to play guts in a movie
He looks even more like shit than he does normally
they focused on the milf. not a bad idea but still
gundam's been shit for decades
the mom pointing the sign out to her son made me lose it
No, it was a total reference, I think even some of the lines.
I only heard about the popular touristic sports in Paris.
south park episode: the losing edge
There has to be an extensive collection of all the gurren lagann references, right?
Kimagure Orange Road had the whole The Graduate tribute.
The Patlabor OVAs had a parody of Godzilla, complete with the skreeonk, Oxygen Destroyer and doctor Serizawa.
I remember the other things but what the fuck was the skreeonk?
The sound Godzilla makes?
Jinguuji-san was seen eating with another man...
Is that the Evil Dead?
I guess I just don't remember it. I didn't notice that it was the same sound in Patlabor, either.
Sora no Woto, Hoozuki, Mononoke and Klimt.
Nice Elfen Lied reference
Ah yeah, that too.
only now realized that I didn't post the picture
The first book is more of a back-story book for the characters, revealing their objectives and their goals for their pilgrimage to Hyperion. It'll all build up to the second book, The Fall of Hyperion. I found interest in all of the pilgrim's stories; the one you're on, Kassad's story, is a story I found to be the most interesting since it didn't have much connection to the rest of life as the other characters had, but is still just as important nonetheless. You're in for a ride user.
Now for the second book, The Fall of Hyperion. Haruhi ties into this book specifically because the story surrounding TMOSH is very similar if not almost a replica Hyperion-Cantos. From the singularity to the advanced species, the objectives of the characters and the factions within the Core, to the time traveling and then even to the main characters, and so on, you'll find that both Haruhi and Hyperion is almost the same story. As you may or may have not known, Tanigawa was heavily inspired by the Hyperion-Cantos, and hints of this is shown in not only the appearance of the actual Fall of Hyperion book in the anime series, but as well as in his novels. If one were to finish reading both the Haruhi series and Hyperion-Cantos, it should maybe be easier to find the similarities and sometimes replicas between both stories.
What is the one by Kaminas death?
all three on the bottom are ashita no joe references
Adding on to this, the first book of the Hyperion series might not show any obvious similarities to Haruhi, but there are slight scratches and hints such as
without spoiling much, the TechnoCore, factions, organizations, etc.
The Fall of Hyperion, the second book, is where you'll find much more obvious connections, similarities, references, etc.
I bravely and stupidly went ahead and read your spoilers, which I am not sure why you spoiled them since it did not spoil anything really beyond the word time travel, which is unexpected but doesn't really effect my enjoyability.
Thanks for being reasonable and not ruining the books for me. Now I am curious to see how things end up comparing as I get into the second book since I had never heard Haruhi was inspired by it.
Sex Pistols, Madonna/Cyndi Lauper, Ziggy Stardust/David Bowie, Michael Jackson.
fucking moeshit and fanservice sells aperently, still hoping for more ww2 anime
this actualy looks great is it fan art or official stuff
And a Lovecraft episode.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one to catch this. What a shit show.
Mononoke and Klimt
The style in Mononoke was actually based off of the Japanese style of paintings known as Ukiyo-e.
probably because no tiny BOOB
He's probably a Freedom fries eating Amerifat who was never taught anything about the history of filthy surrender monkeys. Then again, even people who do recognize the painting often don't even realize that it doesn't depict the revolution of 1789.
fuck off Gavroche.
I am surprised no one saw this during the time Madoka was airing
yeah but she's an animu-nerd so she's watched k-on or a derivative for her world
Yeah, it depicts Coldplay.
What's this from
Top is Tokyo ESP, bottom is Space Dandy. Both of these references came during the same week or so.
I know that, I meant the anime
Shaft shouldn't count, I know, but I'll take the bonus points alone.
The classic anime references in SB69 were pretty funny.
TWO terminator episodes, please. Practically every episode had references to classical western scifi. And don't even start me on the merch they were selling. Besides, it shouldn't count, as it was the 80s, and there wasn't enough anime to reference back then.
Listing them from just one episode would take days. Most of the frames hold more than one reference. But that's Shaft at their best, so doesn't count.
If one were to finish reading both the Haruhi series and Hyperion-Cantos, it should maybe be easier to find the similarities and sometimes replicas between both stories.
I don't know what you were reading and watching, respectively, but it wasn't Hyperion and Haruhi. Having devoured both multiple times (because I love them both), I see none of this.
The best part about this is how it feels Abenobashi is parodying TTGL.
I've always wondered, what's Abe Linclon doing in France during the revolution? Did he actually visit the country at all?
I don't know what you were reading and watching, respectively
he hasn't read Haruhi
It's obviously The Matrix.
TSM TSM TSM
he chopped down all their cherry trees for them
Jesus Christ user
I've got a few, but this one is my favorite.
This was such a weird reference... He was basically a Dr.Doom parody, with a joke about blaming everything on other people... and yet his enemy, rather than anything Fantastic 4 or Marvel related... was frog Goku.
Urusei Yatsura is cheating.
Fucking Spiderman, Superman, all sorts of shit shows up in it.
I love this shot. It looks straight out of a Lupin episode.
i like to spoonfeed
Tokyo ESP got a lot of TV/Movies references
CLG finally won a finals match in LCS after how many years.
HotshotGG anime when?
still chanting after their team got shit on 0-3
Holy shit you guys are cancer.
If that user is talking about people who say "wait for the remake" in regards to LOGH only, I absolutely agree because LOGH is fantastic and I don't know that any media is going to live up to it in coming years.
Song of Ice and Fire please deliver.
oh man softenni is the best ecchi anime
Because he is not japanese
It functions as a reference. Every NCO in the military has a coffee cup, and all of them hold it and drink from it the same way. This is irrefutable fact.
this part was super cool
Only Japan seems to remember the movie.
Fuck what is that line from?
YES! Now I remember!
It wasn't shotashit.
Dirty Pair and Urusei Yatsura did a Graduate joke too.
3 out of those 7 are dead. Nichols is in and out of the hospital and likely taking a trip to the hospice soon. Who's next after her?
Ukiyo-e is one of them. If you go to its Japanese wiki page, it lists all the influences for each story arc. Bakeneko arc for example was inspired among others by Picasso's Guernica.
The apartment exploding
The timing and the fact that this is the final arc
That fucking reflection that had everyone rused
All of it was such a fucking tease.
The perfect ending to this wild as fuck ride and what do we get?
A naked man proposing to be a guys girlfriend
IT WAS FUCKING PERFECT!
90% of the time it's the same fucking Jonathan pose
I wish they went for some other ones, I'm getting sick of that one.
I don't have the image but I distinctly remember Souji, stuck as Solar, sleeping in the same exact manner.
The entirety of Gintama.
Isn't the pistol santa is using the one from blade runner?
Pretty sure it's a temporal impossibility for this to be reference to EVA.
We should do a "/a/ sings" of Joe's last song.
This episode aired like 2 days after I watched Galaxy Express, so I got lucky.
*PAM *PAM *PAM *PAM *PAM *PAM *PAM *PAM
Shitty quality, but you get the point.
I don't have a picture, but I'm pretty sure in Devil May Cry, Dante's sword in guitar case was a reference to Desperado and the guns in guitar case.
What happened to Fang and Biggles?
What's this reference?
I wasn't expecting this
Holy fucking hell pro league fans on Sheeky Forums? God bless this board has some outstanding taste sometimes. Reminds of a month or two back when Sheeky Forums had a massive Halo thread.
Loving every laugh
Sora no Woto was directed and made by the same person who made Elfen Lied. I'm fairly certain he got the guy who did the opening art for Elfen Lied to come back and do it for the opening of Sora no Woto too.
There's a scene in Paprika where Paprika morphs into the Sphinx from Moreau's painting.
What's the reference? I don't get it.
Do you guys like monty python references in anime?
fuck I should watch joe, the anime looks a lot different from the manga
I have wondered whether the Rokka no Yussa character saying "nyaa" was intentional....
Great thread everyone.
It was funny when they commented how that had stopped being funny since he'd do it every single time.
Terrible frenchman: why sir Mahiro is not a fag.
Kekkai Sensen episode 3
does references of anime/manga in other sources counts as well?
That episode was disturbing on so many levels. I miss this show.
Now it does
reference to spawn camping / awp whoring in counter strike 1.5.
Toku in anime / anime in toku
Why is there so much /v/ shit in Sheeky Forums today?
They are confused becase pissanime is down.
I'm pretty sure she or her cousin is holding/we can see a tachikoma from GITS at some point during the show. Couldn't find it though
The show was full of anime references.
As it should.
This OP was just one giant reference.
No, that's other doujin
I can't agree more.
I still remember smiling while watching Lucky Star, during the episode when Konata and friends went to Kyoto and Konata mentioned the towers from Pokemon Gold and Silver.
remember when Lucky Star mentioned Getter Robo? Remember when the entirety of reddit, youtube, and /v/ thought it was Gurren Lagann?
fuck assfaggots game, literally the worst e-sports game, kill yourself
This would've been the greatest if it wasn't for the prolapse.
Have a link to a video with this or something?
Omg I didn't know TTGL was so popular in Japan. Why does everyone reference TTGL? I guess its because it fucking rocks.
THAT was exactly my thought.
maybe try again baby boy.
oh hey user just wanted to tell you that was really clever
Still waiting for #12
It actually took me quite some time until I learned that it's not just some generic go-to expression for shock but actually a reference to Glass no Kamen, since it's used so commonly. Those are the downsides of being ignorant about 70s and 80s shoujo.
A pretty strange thing to put in an anime for little girls.
Cordwainer Smith is based
how did you knew?
Holy shit look at the girls right arm.
there's a third girl or she's a zombie which is holding one of its hands with the other?
That reminds me why do Mekaku and Nisekoi screens apear on the Madokagari website?
Animator Expo's 29 short is chokefull of them. Even Mad Max and World War Z are in.
Requeim for a Dream and Black Swan, both by the same director, had a lot of Perfect Blue on it.
Black Swan was basically Perfect Blue, all I could think when I was on the cinema was just how similar it was.
Because they are the only anime shaft has made besides Madoka and Monogatari.
BS is didactic. PB is almost mind blow.
yep, that's a total turn off
I still fapped though
2001: a space odyssey
Pretty sure EVA came out BEFORE 2001 so that would be a reference TO eva not from it
I'm not even gona reply.
Oh god. I want that Tom & Jerry scene as a still with Freude schöner Götterfunken playing for five minutes.
The punchline was god tier.
I feel dumber just for seeing this post.
when you see it
What's a bunch of anime people doing watching an obscure video gamer and nostigla critic when most of Japan can't even understand English or for that matter finding out about AVGN and Nostasigla Critic in the first place?
I wish I watched more movies and stuff.
The references in this are off the charts.
most of Japan can't even understand English
Maybe there are people who translated the contents or people who can understand English watch them?
Man, lots of foreign media are consumed in Japan, Japan is not that backward, m8.
What's vale's name doing in an actual anime?
There are Japanese subbed AVGN episodes on NicoNico
I know it's disgusting
Man, gotta admit, this scene is fantastic.
If Sunrise in Sunrise count.
Does anyone got caps from first episode of Un-Go?
Now, that's a good bait.
Don't even joke about it, she's everywhere in Japan I swear.
I don't even care if this is bait. It got me good.
Too bad the show was shit.
À bout de souffle
the director bought the right to movie so he could ripoff this scene
I though he denied it all?
No they're not.
I still can't believe there was a bewitched reference in my animoo. What the fuck is next I Love Lucy?
There is an hentai that is a big Bewitched reference.
Wow really? Name?
Dude, Japan is crazy about Bewitched. See: the entirety of Aa! Megami-sama.
Bewitched is referenced a bit more than you'd think, I believe.
The Japanese dub of Betwitched was pretty popular, though it was retitled to "My Wife is a Witch" in Japanese. It gets cited pretty frequently as part of what set the scene for the whole Magical Girl genre to take off the way it did.
While we're on the topic, why is Tom and Jerry always claimed to be super loved in Japan, yet there never seem to be any references to it?
In fact, there seem to be hardly any references to cartoons from that period at all. The most I can think of it that road runner reference in Monogatari.
gainax.geeks tend to put a lot
It's not that good though.
It's because Tom isn't a cute catgirl.
It's not that good though
Well I'll still look into it though, thanks.
There's a scene from Mitsudomoe where Hitoha thinks she's drowning, and the last song played by the band on the Titanic starts playing. It's one of my favourite scenes:
It always bothers me how many references I might be missing in an anime.
For the PB scene in Requiem for a Dream, no, it's a well know fact he bought the rights to use the scene
What he denies is Black Swan being based of PB, I've never seen BS so I can0t comment on that
What about yaoi doujinshi?
Makes sense, Tom and Jerry were pretty gay for each other.
Those are not references, that's just plagiarism.
For a second I thought the right side wasnt TTGL
Am I retarded or is there also a fat albert reference in the bottom middle panel?
Oh, you're actually right.
And The Lamb
Not him but in the context, someone from Sheeky Forums liking something like this (wich is pretty alright entertainment in my opinion) without being assblasted about it being /v/ related or by the fact that it's mainstream seems pretty fucking outstanding to me.
Now, that's a good bait.
This fellow right here.
Space Dandy had a bunch if I recall correctly
Amazing how Jerry manages to still be an asshole on multiple levels in a single page.
Wonderful, they even got Jaspion (Juspion) in there.
Not sure if this counts since pretty much every hero is a reference.
Fuck you that prolapse was great
Botched it. It should read "Yet these hooks will never catch anything"
Do you really think anons remember Doremon?
Was Silverlink somehow involved in making Ping Pong?
I am proud you remembered Macademi Washoi gimme a baby.
I think I missed the reference.
Now that was an amazing reference series that no one remembers.
Four leaf clover user, I hope you are still posting somewhere out there.
I feel nothing but contempt for those fuckers.
This was actually the only reason I watched the Zettai Karen children spin off.
It wasn't awful either so I enjoyed myself.
Exactly my thoughts.
Its only on screen for a split second, but its definitely the Utena bells
What Diebuster? yeah.
TTGL was too I guess
James doing the Gendo pose
You just know he gets what's going on and is desperately trying to keep a straight face.
There are Jojo references in pokemon every other week.
Usopps islands during the time skip was straight out of Captain Bluebear.
You could fill out this entire thread with just Nyaruko's references.
Does that mean they tried to do Utena The Movie again and failed miserably?
I have the feeling that was also a reference to Nadia episode 30. Gainax loves to reference themselves.
So should I continue reading hyperion?
Got any examples?
No shit, you could fill this entire thread with any meme anime that only got referencing better stuff going for it
I saw TR do it again just a couple episodes ago too, but I don't remember exactly when.
Maybe it was Jessie during the contest? That's all that comes to mind right now.
I"m only on Hyperion right now. So far the father told his story and then the main character discovered the weird crap attached to the father.
They played the Big Ben bells somewhere in the first episodes too.
My mom noticed it.
I like Hyperion too, but its more like 6 short stories. The other books have more of a through line.
Also Hyperion like right before you want it to, it would be hard not to read the sequel
I have that coffee cup that Colonel Quaritch is drinking from IRL.
Wait so in Hyperion they don't even get to the planet yet? So it is kind of like a prequel? Second question, anyone else know any good sci-fi manga and books?
You know how they're all just telling their life stories before going before this Shrike/Time Tombs thing?
The book ends right as they arrive
Yujiro Hanma is based on Matt Dillon and a Lion
Biscuit Olivia is based on Sergio Oliva
It literally started the magical girl genre
I could have sworn I saw a shot of the river thames, but I couldnt find it to add.
Bennett from Commando
Evangelion is a reference to everything
same with all Gainax anime
This one is fairly obvious.
Sophia Loren and Burt Reynolds make an appearance in Wounded Man, as actors in G.P.X. porn.
I'm still not 100% sure on the nudity laws here, but it's nothing graphic.
Just found pic related
Kerry looks good in blue
"Nudity laws" are whatever the janitors/mods feel like at the moment. Sometimes you get away with porn, sometimes you get banned for it.
That's an edit
I like the Watamote version better
unlicensed blade works
but that FD
Django in lupin
Why the fuck would the Japanese reference The Expendables?
@Garbage Can Lid
pepe is that you?
Tokyo ESP is Sick Western Reference, bro: the Anime, the author is westaboo as fuck
Pretty sure Bo-bobo doesn't count, because the entire thing is References: The Anime.
parody of a parody
We must go deeper.
one of the few artists with an authentic voice
can't build a decent singing career because she married her grandpa who is currently dying
Unrelated but this is a tragedy.
can't build a decent singing career because she married her grandpa who is currently dying
For anyone who didn't know.
In Rebuild, when Gendo forces dummy plug on Unit-01, the noise it makes upon activation is Colossus' Victory speech played in reverse from Colossus - The Forbin Project.
It's an American movie from 1970, about Skynet taking over. It's actually pretty good.
I remember that level of Tony Hawk Underground 2.
It pains me to think about the autism that let someone notice that must interfere with their daily life.
I feel like they meant to say "Magical Girlfriend" genre.
Best Girls Und Panzer reference is still the ones they made to Kelley's Heroes.
How did the dub handle that? cut out tne entire scene? Since they were to cheap to get the rights for the old song I doubt they'd pay for spam
This is the origin of all magical girls franchise in Japan.
Bewitched came before I Dream Of Jeannie.
Anyway, like I said, they meant Magical Girlfriend, not Magical Girl. Completely different.
And think about it, what magical girl series is I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched like in the slightest?
DO YOU KNOW HOW SEQUENTIAL TURBOS WORK?
DO YOU KNOW HOW ROTARY ENGINES WORK?
LET ME TELL YOU ANYWAY. I DRIVE AN FD TRIANGES TRIANGLES TRIANGLES TRIANGLES MY CAR RUNS HOTTER THAN THE SUN
It's amazing how they ended it with a Gurren Lagann reference. A worthy homage to a great anime.
