So I noticed that anki has been introducing new words in accordance to what I most recently added to the deck. What...? You're not supposed to set your RTK deck to give you new cards everyday, you're supposed to add them as you learn them via custom study.

MPmaster
MPmaster

@askme
A lot of poor people just download a shared RTK deck from Anki without ever seeing the book or trying to learn them before grinding the deck.

SomethingNew
SomethingNew

@Methnerd
Read aloud; mimic conversation you read and hear; talk to yourself. There are plenty of ways of getting used to the fundamentals of speaking and listening without talking to others. It isn't the same as the "real thing", but it will help improve speaking and listening skills and build confidence in both of these facets. Think of it as practising kicking and catching a football, running laps, and tackling, tackling bags (or small children): nothing like the actual match but still overall very useful.

@Burnblaze
After Core6K there are still around 1000 jouyou kanji you don't know thus about 5000 kanji overall,
Two misconceptions to clear up:
1) Core6k has exactly 1651 total unique kanji, not 1,000 of which all but 56 are jouyou. Which leaves 541 Jouyou to learn, not 1,000.
2) There are between 3,000-3,500 kanji in active use (which is itself slightly misleading, since I've read many novels and still seen only 2,500, the final "1000" are quite rare indeed and practically non-existent in lower levels of works). 5,000 is just ridiculous kanken-levels of absurdity.

I stated nothing except objective facts. The only slightly debatable thing I said was that there are 3,000-3,500 kanji in active use, but that remains true if one doesn't intentionally "break the mold" with kanji never used anymore. At the very least, a fluent Japanese adult who reads modern literature will know around 3,000-3,500 kanji.

There are 6355 kanji in the JIS X 208 charset. You have a chance of encountering any of them, even if you can narrow the list down to 3500. Coming out of Core6k, you can only recognize ~1600 of them. Probably 幼女, they often use it the same way we use loli. It's a common trope in things like this to write the girl's age or school year and put a 〇 where the number should go, if that's the effect the author was going for it's not at all surprising to see that word being censored. It's as if it's saying "this is totally not pedo".

I was looking at that list and there seemed to be quite a lot of common kanji there (mostly nouns for things like body parts, animals, and plants). Also, quite a lot of jinmeiyou kanji. Is there some kind of mistake or is that how it's supposed to be?

No matter how you look at it you can't say that jinmeiyou kanji are "uncommon" since you have to know them for JLPT 1

http://scienceline.org/2014/07/are-bilinguals-really-smarter/
Bilingualism creates changes in brain wiring that researchers can actually see. Many researchers use fMRI machines to track brain activity, creating an image of the brain by tracing oxygenated blood as it flows through it. Arturo Hernandez, a professor of developmental psychology at the University of Houston, used fMRI imaging to take brain scans of both bilinguals and monolinguals as they identified objects. He determined that bilinguals had more activity in both hemispheres of the pre-frontal cortex, which controls executive function.

You can stop trying to act smart by disagreeing with stuff now.

IQ tests don't account for specialized intelligence. The best IQ tests only look at pattern solving, and even that is iffy.

I have an IQ of 136+ (99th percentile) and I somewhat agree, but not completely. The idea of IQ is to quantify a so-called general intelligence, rather than any specific areas of intelligence (eg. "EQ"). I agree that the structure of some (or all) tests could definitely be improved, but to decry the entire concept of IQ as bullshit is pushing it a little. I can't really call myself a prodigy or a master in any specific field, but I can say that learning or thinking about things in general is relatively easy for me. Let's just also say that this also applies to learning Japanese for me so this isn't off topic.

@ZeroReborn
If you exclude niggers and spics it's around 105.
You don't have proof of that.

I got the idea of 130+ being genius because if you look at the bell curve, the amount of people above 130 is the same as the amount of people below 70, and below 70 is retarded.
But now I'm going to do the smartest thing I can and go study, fuck this conversation, it's not helping my goal of learning Japanese at all.

My reading speed is very close to English and my native language, I would even go as far as saying that because of the density of information contained in Kanji it's sometimes even faster to read in Japanese than it is in a western language. Take what I said with a grain of salt though.
As for your question, yes I still stumble on some new words or expressions at times, when it happens I simply check it out like everyone.

@Inmate
I wouldn't skip learning Kanji (i.e. studying Kanji on their own), or even learning how to write. This is my only regret, I lost a lot of time because of this. I would also recommend reading early even if you're unconfident about abilities, too. Get something /you/ are motivated in and read, don't go pick whatever manga is recommended because people talk about it, no, simply pick what makes your heart dokidoki.

After all... ask yourself that question : why are you learning Japanese? Isn't it because you want to read stuff? If so then what are you waiting for, you got your かな down? Then do it.

@Stupidasole
Interesting question, I am not sure. I know my English is better than my native language now but I have no idea how does it spare against my Japanese abilities. I've had both English speaking and Japanese friends for a while now and regulary talk to both, so...

@TalkBomber
I answered a similar question earlier. Though I'd like to add that there isn't an unique and ultimate way to learn Japanese, everyone is different, what matters above all is finding a method that both works well for you and motivates you. There's plenty of normie-friendly Japanese media. Even if one tires of anime there's normal TV (inb4 Japanese TV sucks. Game Center CX mother fuckers). One can't tire of manga unless one doesn't like comics in general. Even if one tires of LNs and VNs there's normal books, tons of good normal books. And I don't think I need to mention that TONS of /v/ and /vg/ games are Japanese. Every time I pop into /vr/ there's an "untranslated games" thread wherein people wistfully talk about games they want to get a translation.

@DeathDog
Japanese is one of the world literature languages

This is definitely not true.

Japanese cinema is super famous or anything.

Not really.

I literally can't stop wasting time. At the end of the day I try to think of what I did and the answer is always nothing. It has been like this almost every day for years. If I could learn Japanese without the internet I would probably take out my wifi card and smash it. I wonder how I would procrastinate then.

I have no idea what he means by "world literature languages" specifically, but really, Japan DOES have a LOT of literature, a lot of talented writers, and is continuing to output a lot even to this day. Just peak on Aozora Bunko to see confirmation.

Set yourself goals everyday. I'm like you, I procrastinate a lot and because my brains is messed up it's really hard to go against it, but by setting myself daily goals it got better.

Most people study on their computer, that's never really been a good solution, unless you have textbooks. But here again online dictionaries or even google are far too useful.

So I just translated a pretty freaky Japanese song. Its lyrics are touching though, despite being edgy. Can somebody tell me how I did? It was my first attempt at translating anything on my own
